Twin Cities Information
The Twin Cities area (named for Minneapolis and Saint Paul its 2 largest cities) is the most populated area in the state of Minnesota. It is made up of 186 cities and townships all built around Mississippi, Minnesota and St. Croix rivers. Minneapolis is the larger of the two, but the state capital is located in Saint Paul. Collectively, they are considered to be within the top 20 largest metro areas in the country.
Despite the label of “twins”, each city is independent with defined borders and are actually quite distinct from each other. Minneapolis has more modern architecture, with broader boulevards and an easy to navigate streets.
Saint Paul is laid out more irregularly, with narrower streets, and older late-Victorian architecture. This is partly due to the different cultural backgrounds. Minneapolis was (and is) more affected by Scandinavian/Lutheran heritage, while St. Paul was touched by its early French, Irish and German Catholic roots.
Both Minneapolis and Saint Paul are within the state of Minnesota and in the bordering states of Iowa, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. They border each other and only 9 miles separates their downtown districts.
